Why ScienceShot exists
There are magazines about fundamental physics, and there are publications about the computing industry. They rarely read each other. That is strange, because the same physics keeps turning up on both sides: the silicon that registers a particle in a detector is the silicon that runs an inference job, and the thermodynamics of holding a magnet at 1.9 kelvin is the thermodynamics of stopping a rack of accelerators from cooking itself.
ScienceShot is written from the seam between the two. It was started by a physicist who spent years at CERN building silicon particle detectors before moving into the data center industry, and it covers what that vantage point makes visible — not what was announced this week, but how the machine actually works and why the physics or the economics forces the outcome it does.
Every piece is written for two readers at once: someone curious who has never heard of a lambda point, and a professional who would notice immediately if we got it wrong. We do not average between them. The explanation is there for the first reader and the precision is there for the second, and a piece that gives up either one has failed.
