A relativistic muon crossing 300 µm of silicon produces about 22,600 electron-hole pairs at the most probable signal, or 3.62 fC. Calculate the most probable and mean signal for your sensor. The reference case uses a 3 GeV/c muon; the analytic Landau estimate varies with momentum and thickness.

MIP signal by sensor thickness
Silicon, 3 GeV/c muon, normal incidence. Values computed with the PDG Bethe and Landau formulas; MPV is not linear in thickness.
| Thickness (µm) | Electron-hole pairs (MPV / Mean) | Collected charge (fC, MPV / Mean) | Energy deposit (keV, MPV / Mean) | Landau FWHM (keV) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 3321 / 6353 | 0.5321 / 1.018 | 12.02 / 23 | 3.588 |
| 100 | 6984 / 12710 | 1.119 / 2.036 | 25.28 / 46 | 7.175 |
| 150 | 10780 / 19060 | 1.727 / 3.054 | 39.01 / 68.99 | 10.76 |
| 200 | 14650 / 25410 | 2.348 / 4.071 | 53.04 / 91.99 | 14.35 |
| 300 | 22580 / 38120 | 3.617 / 6.107 | 81.73 / 138 | 21.53 |
| 500 | 38890 / 63530 | 6.231 / 10.18 | 140.8 / 230 | 35.88 |
Full charge collection, no gain or trapping; Q = Ne (one electron charge per pair). Thickness is the traversed path. Landau FWHM describes energy-loss straggling, not electronic resolution. Thin-absorber, heavy-particle model; no shell or Barkas corrections.
